Jad Fair - Paper cutting

We are delighted to announce Jad Fair’s art show of Paper cutting artworks.

“Celebrate The Celebration” is Jad Fair’s first solo show at Hiromart Gallery Tokyo.

Jad Fair is an artist and musician, best known as a co-founder for the legendary alternative rock band Half Japanese. Released over 50 records, including collaborations, many number of publications and also he is featured in two films; “The Devil And Daniel Johnston" (2005) and ”Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King” (1993)

With his music career of over 3 decades, he also showed another talent for painting and paper cutting through art shows. This solo exhibition of Jad Fair features his Paper cuttings made for the debut exhibition “Celebrate The Celebration.”

Currently he lives in Texas with his wife, their 3 dogs and 2 horses.

In 1974, with his brother David, Jad Fair co-founded the lo-fi alternative rock group Half Japanese. Over the ensuing three decades, Half Japanese released nearly 30 records, and in the process, attracted a solid base of fans passionate about the band’s pure, unbridled enthusiasm for rock and roll. Illustrious Half Japanese fans include Penn Jillette (of the comedy duo Penn & Teller), who financed the 50 Skidillion Watts record label in order to release Half Japanese’s records. Kurt Cobain was also a devoted fan of the group; in 1994 he asked Half Japanese to open for the east coast leg of Nirvana’s “In Utero” tour. They did eight shows.

“Half Japanese: The Band That Would Be King” is a critically acclaimed documentary that chronicles the band’s unique history and trajectory. Directed by Jeff Feuerzeig, the film was released in 1993. 

Jad also performs and records as a solo artist, and occasionally collaborates with such musicians as Daniel Johnston, Teenage Fanclub, Moe Tucker (of Velvet Underground), Yo La Tengo, Steve Shelly and Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth), John Zorn, Kramer, and more. His songs have been featured in the soundtracks of two major biographical films: Kurt Cobain: About A Son, and The Devil And Daniel Johnston, as well as in several animated shorts by Martha Colburn, two European films: the Swiss Luci et Maintenant, and the Italian Ora O Mai Piu. In 2004, Comedy Central’s Trigger Happy TV show featured “Crush On You,” a song from the Teenage Fanclub & Jad Fair: Words of Wisdom and Hope album, in the soundtrack of episode #302. 

Jad’s talent for album cover (he produced many of Half Japanese’s and most of his own solo album covers) led Jad to a second career as visual artist. His simple, joyous drawings and intricate, complex paper cuttings are shown in galleries across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan. Sixteen books of his artwork have been published in the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, The Netherlands, the U.S., and Japan, including the colorful Blue Skies and Monsters, published by Map in 2006. 

Jad has done commercial artwork as well: One of his cutouts is featured in a Nike “running in the year 2020” poster, and he created an animated viral video for the Dr. Kracker flatbreads, an Austin, Texas-based natural cracker company.
